De film beleefde zijn Amerikaanse premi\u00e8re op het festival. Onlangs nog won &#8216;Gardenia : Before the Last Curtain Falls&#8217; ook al de Grote Prijs tijdens het Festival International du Film sur l\u2019Art (FIFA) in Montr\u00e9al, een van de meest toonaangevende filmfestivals voor films rond kunst. Bij ons in Vlaanderen, en ook in Duitsland, kwam de documentaire uit onder de titel &#8216;Gardenia&#8217;, met als ondertitel, &#8216;Before the Last Curtain Falls&#8217;, omdat het stuk zonder hetwelk de film nooit zou gemaakt zijn hier wereldberoemd is. In Amerika en elders ter wereld reist de documentaire rond onder de titel &#8216;Before the Last Curtain Falls&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nIn &#8216;Gardenia : Before The Last Curtain Falls&#8217; volgt de Canadees-Duitse regisseur <strong>Thomas Wallner<\/strong> een Vlaamse groep acterende transseksuelen en drag queens \u2013 allen zestiger en zeventiger \u2013 terwijl ze zich voorbereiden om een laatste keer te schitteren op de sc\u00e8ne. Ze getuigen over hun verlangen om zichzelf te zijn en de moed die ze hiervoor nodig hebben. Hun verhalen werden de basis voor de theatervoorstelling<em> \u2018Gardenia\u2019<\/em>, geregisseerd door <strong>Alain Platel<\/strong> en <strong>Frank Van Laecke<\/strong>. In de documentaire nemen ze een afscheid van de spotlights en pikken ze hun oude leven terug op.<\/p>\n<p>Het is niet de eerste prijs voor de film, op het prestigieuze documentaire festival Hot Docs in Canada won &#8216;Before The Last Curtain Falls&#8217; in 2014 de Speciale Prijs van de Jury, waarop tal van selecties volgden voor internationale festivals volgden zoals o.a. DOK.fest M\u00fcnchen, het Internationaal Filmfestival van Vancouver, het G\u00f6teborg Filmfestival en IDFA in Amsterdam. Eind maart kaapte de documentaire bovendien nog de Grote Prijs weg op het Festival International du Film sur l\u2019Art (FIFA) in Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>De Vlaamse cineaste <strong>Eva K\u00fcpper<\/strong> (<em>&#8216;What\u2019s in a Name&#8217;<\/em>) schreef samen met Wallner het scenario van &#8216;Before the Last Curtain Falls&#8217;, de film werd ook ingeblikt met een grotendeels Vlaamse crew.
