Tijdens de 52ste editie van Film Fest Gent ontving de Amerikaanse actrice Theresa Russell vanavond een Joseph Plateau Honorary Award. Met deze prijs eert het festival gasten die een uitzonderlijke bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de filmkunst. Russell kreeg de prijs als erkenning voor haar eigenzinnige en veelzijdige carri\u00e8re, die zowel Hollywood als de onafhankelijke cinema van de jaren 1980 en 1990 omvat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Theresa Russell: een veelzijdige en onverschrokken actrice<\/h3>\n

Theresa Russell werd in 1957 geboren in San Diego, Californi\u00eb. Op negentienjarige leeftijd debuteerde ze in The Last Tycoon<\/em> (1976) van Elia Kazan, waarin ze meteen naast Robert De Niro, Jeanne Moreau en Robert Mitchum speelde. Haar natuurlijke pr\u00e9sence en vermogen om gelaagde, vaak complexe personages te vertolken, maakten haar al snel tot een van de meest opvallende jonge actrices van haar generatie.<\/p>\n

In de decennia die volgden, bouwde Russell een carri\u00e8re uit die wars was van conventies. Ze koos steevast voor uitdagende rollen die het midden hielden tussen sensualiteit en kwetsbaarheid, intellect en emotie. Ze schitterde in Black Widow<\/em>(1987, Bob Rafelson), Whore<\/em> (1991, Ken Russell), Kafka<\/em> (1991, Steven Soderbergh) en Wild Things<\/em> (1998, John McNaughton), films die telkens haar veelzijdigheid en lef bevestigden. Ook in onafhankelijke producties en tv-series bleef ze een vaste waarde, onder meer in The Believer<\/em> (2001, Henry Bean) en Jolene<\/em> (2008, Dan Ireland), waarin ze naast jonge talenten als Ryan Gosling en Jessica Chastain acteerde.<\/p>\n

Naast haar eigenzinnig traject in de Amerikaanse filmgeschiedenis verwierf Russell ook internationale erkenning door haar intensieve samenwerking met haar toenmalige echtgenoot, de Britse regisseur Nicolas Roeg. Samen maakten ze zes films, waaronder het controversi\u00eble en visionaire Bad Timing<\/em> (1980), het spirituele epos Eureka<\/em> (1983) en het psychoseksuele drama Track 29 <\/em>(1988). Hoewel Roeg vaak als visionair wordt geroemd, wordt ook steeds duidelijker erkend hoezeer Russell zijn oeuvre mee vormgaf en verrijkte met haar gedurfde vertolkingen.<\/p>\n

Theresa Russell op Film Fest Gent<\/h3>\n

Russell was op de 52ste editie van Film Fest Gent aanwezig in meerdere hoedanigheden. Ze trad op als voorzitter van de Internationale Jury en werd ge\u00eberd als centrale gast binnen het Classics-programma rond Nicolas Roeg, Fractured Visions: A Nicolas Roeg Retrospective<\/em>. Met veertien films levert Classics-curator Patrick Duynslaegher een retrospectieve waarbij duidelijk wordt hoe de creatieve kruisbestuiving tussen regisseur en actrice leidde tot enkele van de meest intense en grensverleggende films uit de Britse cinema. Na afloop van de vertoning van Bad Timing<\/em> in Kinepolis 6 ging Duynslaegher in gesprek met Russell tijdens een Actor\u2019s Talk over haar carri\u00e8re, leven en werk. Aansluitend werd ze gehuldigd met de Joseph Plateau Honorary Award.<\/p>\n

Joseph Plateau Honorary Award<\/h3>\n

De Joseph Plateau Honorary Award wordt uitgereikt aan festivalgasten die een uitzonderlijke bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de kunst van het filmmaken. De prijs is een replica van professor Joseph Plateaus fenakistiscoop, een uitvinding die mee aan de basis lag van het bewegende beeld.<\/p>\n
