Centraal staat een weduwe (hier gespeeld door Kristin Scott Thomas zelf) die op het punt staat om voor de derde keer in het huwelijksbootje te stappen. Voor die bijzondere gelegenheid zijn haar drie dochters teruggekeerd naar het huis waar ze opgegroeid zijn: Katherine (rol van Scarlett Johansson), Victoria (Sienna Miller) en Georgina (Emily Beecham).
