De Amerikaanse actrice Theresa Russell wordt de voorzitter van de Internationale Jury op de 52ste editie van Film Fest Gent, die plaatsvindt van 8 tot en met 19 oktober 2025. Russell, een intrigerende Hollywoodfiguur uit de jaren \u201980 en \u201990, is vooral bekend om haar samenwerkingen met de Britse regisseur Nicolas Roeg. Niet toevallig wijdt het festival dit jaar ook zijn Classics-programma aan deze grensverleggende cineast.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Een muze aan het hoofd van de jury<\/h3>\n

Theresa Russell maakte in 1976 haar filmdebuut naast Robert De Niro in The Last Tycoon<\/em> van Elia Kazan en groeide uit tot een actrice die durf en kwetsbaarheid wist te combineren. Hoewel ze furore maakte met rollen in onder andere Black Widow<\/em> (1987), Whore<\/em> (1991), Kafka<\/em> (1991) en Wild Things<\/em> (1998), blijft ze onlosmakelijk verbonden met het visionaire werk van haar echtgenoot Nicolas Roeg. Samen maakten ze zes films, waaronder het sensuele Bad Timing<\/em> (1980), het spirituele Eureka<\/em> (1983) en het intrigerende Track 29<\/em> (1988).<\/p>\n

Tijdens Film Fest Gent zal Russell samen met haar medejuryleden \u2014 die later bekendgemaakt worden \u2014 de Offici\u00eble Competitie beoordelen. Deze competitie legt al sinds de jaren \u201980 de nadruk op de rol van muziek in film<\/strong>. De jury reikt op het einde van het festival de Grand Prix voor Beste Film<\/strong> en de Georges Delerue Award voor Beste Soundtrack of Sound Design<\/strong> uit.<\/p>\n

Fractured Visions<\/em>: een ode aan Nicolas Roeg<\/h3>\n

Naast Russell eert Film Fest Gent ook het oeuvre van Nicolas Roeg<\/strong>, een regisseur die volgens velen zijn tijd ver vooruit was. Onder de titel Fractured Visions: A Nicolas Roeg Retrospective<\/em> cureerde filmcriticus Patrick Duynslaegher<\/strong> een programma dat een caleidoscopische blik biedt op Roegs radicale stijl. Bekende titels als Performance<\/em> (1970), Walkabout<\/em> (1971), Don’t Look Now<\/em> (1973), The Man Who Fell to Earth<\/em> (1976) en The Witches<\/em> (1990) tonen een filmmaker die moeiteloos zintuigen, tijd en realiteit door elkaar laat vloeien.<\/p>\n

\u201cArtistieke moed overleeft de tand des tijds,\u201d aldus Duynslaegher. \u201cEen retrospectieve als deze is geen nostalgische blik, maar een noodzakelijke confrontatie met cinema die haar grenzen verlegt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voor de ontdekkers: The Road to Roeg<\/em><\/h3>\n

Voor wie minder vertrouwd is met Roegs werk, organiseert het festival de inleidende talk The Road to Roeg<\/em>. In Gent (2 oktober) en Brussel (6 oktober, inclusief vertoning van Castaway<\/em>) gaan Anke Brouwers, Patrick Duynslaegher en regisseur Bert Scholiers in gesprek over het labyrintische universum van Roeg. Daarnaast verschijnt er een uitgebreide printpublicatie<\/strong> met context en filmbesprekingen, en een online dossier<\/strong> onder de noemer The Roeg Files<\/em>, met langere essays \u00e9n een heruitgave van een interview met Theresa Russell.<\/p>\n
