In aanwezigheid van regisseur Tim Mielants en de cast en crew van openingsfilm ‘<\/strong>Small Things Like These’<\/strong> is de 51ste editie van Film Fest Gent officieel van start gegaan. Tot en met zondag 20 oktober toont het festival werk van zowel internationale meesters als talenten van eigen bodem, en verwelkomt het cast- en crewleden op de rode loper. Voor haar uitzonderlijke bijdrage aan de filmkunst ontving actrice Emily Watson een Joseph Plateau Honorary Award – een eer die morgenavond ook regisseur Michel Khleifi te beurt valt. Tijdens de jaarlijkse WSA Film Music Days (15 – 17 okt.) haalt het festival componisten uit de schaduw van hun studio en zet hen in de schijnwerpers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

124 langspeelfilms, 29 kortfilms, twee symfonische concerten, een reeks eclectische muzikale trips, tal van talks en een onvergetelijke Closing Party. De 51ste editie van Film Fest Gent viert film in al zijn vormen en kleuren. De komende elf dagen vormt Gent een feestelijke ontmoetingsplaats voor al wie de zevende kunst hoog in het vaandel draagt: van filmliefhebbers, makers, studenten, pers tot componisten, want muziek zit in het DNA van het festival. Met het James Horner Tribute Concert en de 24ste editie van de World Soundtrack Awards – beide onderdeel van de WSA Film Music Days – is het muziekluik van het festival meer dan ooit iets om naar uit te kijken.<\/p>\n

\u2018Small Things Like These\u2019 geeft startschot FFG2024<\/strong><\/p>\n

Met vrouwelijk talent op kop opent ‘Small Things Like These’ officieel het festival. Naast de Belgische regisseur Tim Mielants zijn acteurs Emily Watson, Eileen Walsh en Zara Devlin aanwezig om dit intieme drama aan het publiek voor te stellen. ‘Small Things Like These’ brengt een donkere bladzijde uit de katholieke geschiedenis van Ierland onder de aandacht en vertelt het verhaal van een kolenhandelaar wiens vredige bestaan wordt verstoord wanneer hij een geheim ontdekt in het plaatselijke klooster, geleid door zuster Mary.<\/p>\n

De Britse actrice Emily Watson, bekend van Lars von Triers ‘Breaking the Waves’, Charlie Kaufmans ‘Synecdoche, New York’ en bekroonde series als ‘Chernobyl’, brengt het complexe karakter van zuster Mary tot leven. Voor haar indrukwekkende prestatie in Mielants derde speelfilm en haar acteercarri\u00e8re als geheel ontving ze vanavond een Joseph Plateau Honorary Award. Deze prijs wordt uitgereikt aan festivalgasten die een belangrijke bijdrage hebben geleverd aan de filmkunst.<\/p>\n
