\u2018Small Things Like These\u2019, de derde langspeelfilm van de Belgische regisseur Tim Mielants (‘De Patrick’, ‘WIL’), is de offici\u00eble openingsfilm van Film Fest Gent 2024. Op woensdag 9 oktober mag Mielants het startschot geven voor de 51ste editie van het internationaal filmfestival. Het aangrijpende drama met Oscarwinnaar Cillian Murphy in de hoofdrol vertelt het verhaal van een kolenhandelaar in het Ierland van de jaren \u201880 die op een geheim van het plaatselijke klooster stoot.<\/strong><\/p>\n

De Iers-Belgische productie \u2018Small Things Like These\u2019 mocht in februari de Berlinale op gang trekken en zal zijn Belgische premi\u00e8re beleven als openingsfilm van Film Fest Gent. In Berlijn kreeg de film lovende kritieken van de internationale pers en won actrice Emily Watson de Zilveren Beer voor Beste Bijrol.<\/p>\n

Het is de verfilming van de gelijknamige roman van Claire Keegan, bekend van haar kortverhaal Foster dat eerder al een filmbewerking kreeg als The Quiet Girl. Het verhaal speelt zich af in een kleine havenstad in Ierland tijdens de jaren ’80, waar de katholieke kerk een verstikkende invloed uitoefende. Bill Furlong (Cillian Murphy), een kolenhandelaar en vader van vijf dochters, leidt een bescheiden leven. Zijn rustige bestaan wordt verstoord wanneer hij een geheim ontdekt in een plaatselijk klooster, geleid door Sister Mary (Emily Watson). Deze ontdekking dwingt Bill om zijn eigen stilzwijgen onder de loep te nemen.<\/p>\n

Zonder ze bij naam te noemen, werpt Small Things Like These een licht op de misbruikpraktijken van de Magdalena-wasserijen die decennialang vrouwen – vaak jonge, alleenstaande moeders – huisvestten in erbarmelijke omstandigheden. In 2013 kwamen er offici\u00eble excuses van de Ierse staat aan de tienduizenden slachtoffers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIk ben enorm trots dat \u2018Small Things Like These\u2019 mag aansluiten bij de prachtige films die hier in Gent hun premi\u00e8re hebben beleefd. De film gaat over de kracht van kleine, alledaagse momenten en hoe juist die momenten ons leven kunnen veranderen. Waarden die ik ook terugvind in de traditie van dit festival.<\/em>\u201d Tim Mielants.<\/div>

De voorbije jaren verwierf de Belgische cineast Tim Mielants naam en faam in binnen- \u00e9n buitenland. Nog v\u00f3\u00f3r zijn langspeeldebuut ‘De Patrick’ (2019), regisseerde hij het derde seizoen van de Britse tv-serie ‘Peaky Blinders’ (2016), waar hij voor het eerst op set stond met Cillian Murphy, de Ierse acteur die in maart een Oscar won voor zijn rol als J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolans veelbesproken biopic. Na het succes van ‘De Patrick’ en ‘WIL’ (2023), beide goed voor zeven Ensors, werkten Mielants en Murphy opnieuw samen voor ‘Small Things Like These’. Murphy en Alan Moloney gaven aanvankelijk de opdracht voor de bewerking van Keegans roman aan Enda Walsh via hun bedrijf Big Things Films. Murphy overhandigde het script persoonlijk aan Mielants, wat ertoe leidde dat Matt Damon als producent bij het project betrokken raakte via Artists Equity, de studio die hij mede-oprichtte met Ben Affleck en die de film financierde.<\/p>\n

Naast Tim Mielants was er ook een grote Belgische inbreng op verscheidene andere posten. De tactiele fotografie is van de hand van DoP Frank van den Eeden (Close, Holly), voor de montage rekende Mielants op Alain Dessauvage (Close, La civil). Senjan Jansen zorgde voor de muziekcompositie.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe zijn bijzonder fier de 51ste editie van Film Fest Gent te openen met een ijzersterke internationale film geregisseerd door iemand van eigen bodem: Tim Mielants. Dit opvallend ingetogen en toch intense drama met in de hoofdrollen Cillian Murphy en Emily Watson werd geproduceerd door onder meer Matt Damon en Ben Affleck, maar kleurt opvallend Belgisch. Niet alleen is de beheerste regie in handen van Mielants (die daarmee de allereerste Vlaamse regisseur ooit werd die een A-filmfestival als dat van Berlijn mocht openen), ook een groot deel van de (post)productie was in Belgische handen (montage, muziek, coproducenten en de bijzondere fotografie). \u2018Small Things Like These\u2019 is een productie van Murphy en Alan Moloney via Big Things Films samen met Catherine Magee. Matt Damon en Drew Vinton zijn de producenten voor Artists Equity. Aanvullende financiering kwam van Screen Ireland\/F\u00eds \u00c9ireann en de film werd in Belgi\u00eb gecoproduceerd door Wilder Content, het productiehuis van Tim Mielants en Bert Van Dael.<\/p>\n
