The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> van Jessica Woodworth en Peter Brosens is uitgenodigd voor het Torino Film Festival (22-30 november), waar de film zijn Italiaanse premi\u00e8re krijgt in de After Hours-sectie. Het vervolg op King of the Belgians<\/em> ging in september in wereldpremi\u00e8re in Toronto, de Belgische premi\u00e8re vond plaats tijdens Film Fest Gent. De bioscooprelease in Belgi\u00eb staat gepland voor februari 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sinds de wereldpremi\u00e8re in de Contemporary World Cinema-sectie van het Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in september haalde The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> al selecties binnen voor de internationale festivals van o.a. Zagreb, Warschau, Sevilla en Cairo. Na de Belgische premi\u00e8re op het Film Fest Gent mocht actrice Geraldine Chaplin de Joseph Plateau Honorary Award in ontvangst nemen als bekroning voor haar carri\u00e8re en haar bijdrage aan de internationale filmwereld.<\/p>\n

The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> vertelt hoe de laatste Koning der Belgen de eerste Keizer van Europa wordt. Peter Van den Begin speelt opnieuw Nicolas III, Koning der Belgen. In King of the Belgians<\/em> zag hij zijn koninkrijk uiteenvallen, in The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> raakt de koning door een geweerschot in Sarajevo gewond aan het oor en wordt hij wakker in het zomerverblijf van Tito, de voormalige president van Joegoslavi\u00eb, op een eiland voor de westkust van Kroati\u00eb. Hij probeert te ontsnappen, maar wordt tegengehouden en door een speciale delegatie benoemd als eerste Keizer van het nationalistische Nova Europa. Maar de koning wil niet langer zijn leven door anderen laten bepalen en neemt het lot in eigen handen.<\/p>\n

De film werd in het najaar van 2018 opgenomen op de Kroatische Brijuni-eilanden. Naast Peter Van den Begin zijn er opnieuw belangrijke bijrollen voor Titus De Voogdt, Lucie Debay, Bruno Georis en Pieter van der Houwen.\u00a0Naast Geraldine Chaplin duikt ook Udo Kier op. Beiden zijn klinkende namen uit de internationale filmwereld. Ook de crew is grotendeels dezelfde als voor King of the Belgians: Ton Peters stond achter de camera, David Verdurme deed de montage en Pepijn Aben verzorgde het geluid.<\/p>\n

The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> is de vijfde speelfilm van het regisseursduo Woodworth en Brosens. Eerder regisseerden ze samen King of the Belgians<\/em> (2016), La cinqui\u00e8me saison\u00a0<\/em>(2012), Altiplano<\/em> (2009) en Khadak<\/em> (2006).<\/p>\n

The Barefoot Emperor<\/em> is een productie van Bo Films, in coproductie met Wajnbrosse Productions, het Nederlandse Topkapi Films, het Kroatische Propeler Film en het Bulgaarse Art Fest. BE for Films vertegenwoordigt de film wereldwijd. Lumi\u00e8re brengt de film op 5 februari 2020 in de Belgische filmzalen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
